We need more diversity in Broadcasting Ownership. How many Black owners are there in DC? What is the percentage of Black population in DC?

Gus in Gaithersburg is not a Hoot. He is not even a clown. His postings show that he is not smart enough to be a clown! What a waste of time.

Does anyone have any insight into the LoudounNow newspaper in Leesburg? For the past several weeks we have not received it at our home in Leesburg and I saw where they were asking for donations to ‘support community journalism’. The Loudoun Times Mirror announced in June the paper was reducing the frequency at which they deliver the print paper free to many driveways and they are rolling out a metered paywall. These are the only two papers of note in Loudoun County, with a few others serving specific areas, and could lead to a void in coverage of the county which is often ignored by DC media.

Your reporting in the DC/ Baltimore media the good, bad and ugly is outstanding. Do you offer a podcast or newsletter ? The independent non corporate controlled station WPFW (Pacifica) has joined up with WBAI in New York some of their programs. Recently there was a native American activist of the name Jay Winter Night Wolf who had a show on WPFW that disappeared from his Friday afternoon show. On another program when listeners would call in with inquiries about his presence the answer would be , “not on anymore” or when the caller would persist on why the host would respond “station cannot discuss or is an internal affair”. Your website is a fair and unbiased reporting on the broadcast media. Please respond if you can.

Dave's response: Thanks for the kind words. Can anyone address the WPFW issues?

So Marc Clarke has lost yet another radio gig. Quite a competitive field, but wow, he’s just had some bad breaks. Just wonder what other opportunities are out there for him. Thought I heard he and Allison were either doing or looking into doing a podcast.

Larry O'Connor's gay! Larry O'Connor's gay! Larry O'Connor's gay! Gettin' old, Buckwheat. And before you get started, like Roger LeCoco I call everyone Buckwheat. "Both have pathetic dead rats on their heads and both sound like they are light on [sic] the loafers." Joe Biden is well known for having hairplugs, and actual creepy behavior on video, why is he not included? Dunno. The incompetuderation on display here is bedazzling. Dave, is this homophobic crap the sort of thing you want to be promulgating? It's been going on for months/years. Of course we all know being gay is BAD, right? But it didn't offend Wob Spewak so it's okay? As The Honorable Elijah Manson taught us in possibly his best song "When you're livin' on the road/ And you think sometimes you're starvin'/ Get on off that trip my friend/ Just get in them cans and start carvin' " www.youtube.com... Time to take out the Pull Hammer my friend. Gus in the Gaithersburg

The mother's basement shtick never gets old. Sounds like a couple 'baggers have a crush on a certain someone and they're doing the grade school thing of 'bagging on someone they secretly yearn for but don't want their confusing new feelings to cause them to lose face with their peers. Sorry guys, but I belong to Jesus, my Lord and Savior. He's from El Salvador. Gus in the Gaithersburg

Another funny rant from Gus in Gaithersburg/Cliff Clavin. Apparently he hates Conservatives but after a 15 minute trip to CVS he is now a public health expert. Pray for Gus, if anyone needs prayer it is our own Cliff Clavin.

Allegations Against Martin DiCaro - dcist.com - Repeatedly telling a spokesperson for a D.C. councilmember how he thought she looked in a dress. Sending suggestive, late-night messages to young colleagues. Inviting a news assistant to a networking event, only to bring her to one-on-one drinks and ask her to come home with him. Looking women up and down “like a cartoon wolf” in the workplace. Telling a transportation expert at professional drinks that “I want to fuck you, no strings attached.” These are some of the allegations that women in the local media and transportation scene have made against Martin Di Caro, who served as one of the D.C. region’s premier transportation reporters for half a decade. His most visible perch was at local public radio station WAMU until he departed at the end of 2017. (DCist was acquired by WAMU in 2018.) In isolation, many of the women believed the incidents didn’t rise to the level of an official complaint. Others feared speaking out would damage their careers. Viewed in totality, though, the allegations depict a pattern of inappropriate behavior, even as Di Caro continued to receive professional opportunities and public accolades. He was considered a trusted source for transportation news. And he became, among some advocates and enthusiasts in the field, a kind of beloved (if somewhat eccentric) figure. Di Caro did not respond to multiple requests for comment, including a detailed list of the allegations in this story, though he did send an email to former colleagues broadly denying that he had ever engaged in troubling behavior at WAMU. DCist spoke with 24 people, all women or other people of marginalized genders, who said they experienced some form of inappropriate behavior from Di Caro while working as journalists, government communications professionals, or members of the transportation advocacy community, and with additional people who witnessed the events firsthand. Many were able to provide texts, emails, and other written communication to back up their accounts. Leadership at WAMU, his employer from 2012 to 2017, knew about some of the alleged misconduct. It was the subject of at least two human resources investigations, one in 2014 and another in 2016, according to documents obtained by DCist. “Your actions and communications have caused some individuals to feel harassed, offended, insulted, and/or degraded,” reads a confidential 2016 memo from station management to Di Caro obtained by DCist. He would continue to work at the station for another year and a half.....

AUG 1. RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT. Had this current version of' Counterculture been around back in the Don & Mike Show days, no way the white, short, morbidly husky Mike Sorce would have been able to use the on-air persona Don 'Geronimo" Today, widespread national condemnation and radio station / network protests would have taken Don Geronimo off the air faster than Mike Sorce saying Native American Lives Matter.

"Also, please pray for friends of WMAL who are, or will become, sick due to the pseudo-science and political trickery (misinformation) disseminated from WMAL and their cadre of BS spewing guests who are trying to confuse the public during the national health pandemic." Wow, the sinister SMWMALSH seems to be controlling the world in some people's minds. Now they control the Dutch government. www.reuters.com... "Cadre"? I don't hear too many guests on WMAL, they mainly seem to be on the 3-6 pm show. Lighten up, Francis. Gus in the Gaithersburg

Separated at birth? Willing to bet Bill Hess he could not tell WMAL talker Larry "Implants" O'Connor from Maryland Democrat congressman Jamie "Implants" Raskin. Both have pathetic dead rats on their heads and both sound like they are light on the loafers. Only difference is the two could not be more politically apart. Note: Gus your mother is calling down to basement: Mac and cheese is ready. Signed: Not Gus In The Gaithersburg

One of WMAL's go to groups for interviews is Turning Point USA, a conservative group that goes to high schools and colleges to recruit students for the "conservative" movement and cause. Sadly, Bill Montgomery, founder of TP USA, died yesterday of Covid 19 complications. He was 80 years old. TP USA has since removed all memes and editorials from its website that mocked mask wearing during this pandemic. Please pray for Mr. Montgomery. Also, please pray for friends of WMAL who are, or will become, sick due to the pseudo-science and political trickery (misinformation) disseminated from WMAL and their cadre of BS spewing guests who are trying to confuse the public during the national health pandemic. This message is a public service announcement designed to save lives, and encourage public mask wearing.

It's nice to see that WHUR has connected with the DMV, apparently to supply music in the ceiling speakers while we wait for license renewals. I hope they don't turn it up too loud and we cannot hear our numbers being called. But since we have to wait so long, at least before the place closed for coronavirus, it will be nice to tap my foot to something soothing.

RE: WBAL-DT Got confirmation from WBAL that they are on their new antenna, but no word if they are at full-power, or if any other tenant on the candelabra has any remaining work to finish up.

Mr. Eddie Stubbs, saying his final good-bye on WSM, heard on a 1941 Emerson radio...

I didn’t see anyone mention this so I’ll post it as he said it on Facebook on Stan Charles’ Pressbox Live podcast. Mel Antonen is a COVID-19 survivor and was at one point quite sick, so that’s one of many reasons you have not seen him on MASN since baseball restarted. He’s much better now thank God. — BaltoMedia.net

Well. Allison Seymour and husband Mark are done at WHUR. Frank Ski who just left his morning show gig in Atlanta is returning the WHUR Afternoon drive starting in August.

Early observations for MASN baseball coverage of the Orioles and the Nationals. Pre and post game shows...both totally unwatchable...for the Nats....Johnny and Ray continue to be missed. The Two guys trying to take their place can't come close. For the O;s...Tom and Rick must be laughing at their replacements. Mike Bordick is a fine analyst but who is that guy with him? Looks scared to death and extremely uncomfortable. Bob Carpenter is okay as the longtime Nats play by play voice but he's stuck with an analyst that will not shut up. No wonder they are the lowest rated broadcast team in MLB. Scott Garceau gave up his radio gig to return to do TV play by play for the Birds but he is no Gary Thorne. Just when you thought the MASN coverage could not get any worse, surprise. They've done a good job of dropping it another notch.

(RE: Mark Kaye) He is currently doing morning drive at WAPE in Jacksonville (CHR station owned by Cox) and also hosts a mid-morning right wing talk show on their sister station WOKV-FM prior to Rush Limbaugh’s show.

Please pray for two dear friends of WMAL. Herman Cain died today from Covid 19, and Louie Gohmert was diagnosed yesterday with the virus. Both Cain and Gohmert were strong anti-mask proponents.

Legendary radio personality Frank Ski is bringing his widely popular radio show to the DMV taking over afternoons at 96.3 WHUR. “The Frank Ski Show with Nina Brown” airs weekdays from 3 pm to 7 pm starting Monday, August 3. “The Frank Ski Show with Nina Brown” will deliver up-to-date commentary on trending headlines, entertainment news, and all things important to the Black culture while providing fun, edgy, and interactive engagement. Known for their ability to connect with the audience on relevant issues with transparency, Ski and Brown are a force to be reckoned with on-air. The pair promises to provide just the right mixture designed to inform, inspire, and entertain. “Connecting to the Washington, DC listeners is extremely important to me during this challenging time in our history,” said Ski. Ski is no stranger to the DMV. He began his radio career in the District in the early 1990s before moving on to Baltimore and then to Atlanta and back to DC for a stint at WHUR in 2013. Brown has worked in radio and television for nearly two decades and has produced several of Ski’s #1 rated radio shows. “Frank Ski has dominated ratings and has an incredible legacy of community enrichment wherever he is on the air. He is a media icon and adding his name to WHUR once again completes our DMV Dream Team,” said WHUR Program Director Al Payne. The addition of the “Frank Ski Show with Nina Brown” to WHUR's weekday line-up takes the programming line-up to a whole new level. WHUR’s weekday programs also include, “The Steve Harvey Morning Show” from 6 am to 10 am, “Autumn Joi’s Live Squad” from 10 am to 3 pm, “The Daily Drum with Harold Fisher” from 7 pm to 7:30 pm, and “The Original Quiet Storm with John Monds” from 7:30 pm to midnight. ”Now more than ever, it’s crucial to have knowledgeable trustworthy voices on the air. Frank and Nina have a proven track record of success and adding them to the WHUR team is a huge win for us,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater.

Here in Eastern Carroll County relative signal strength of Baltimore TV's are now WMAR 2 (27) 90%, WBAL 11 (10) 92%, WJZ 13 (11) 92%. Guess the new antennas are all working good. Hope it keeps up that way.

Yes, 2 and 11 had noticeable increases in power around 4pm yesterday. Looks 2 got its repaired backup facility online, because it's still weaker than when they were running the full 800 kW through the thing. I see the most likely explanation for 11 is that it was also running on reduced power - it was far weaker than 13 here, which defied explanation as their backup facilities are supposed to be almost identical in my direction - now their signal strengths are equal. Since there was not and has not been a commensurate increase in 13's signal, they have surely not transitioned to the final facilities yet, although 13 applied for Program Test Authority yesterday (and all along has stated on their website the cutover would take place around 1 August) so it is imminent.

WJZ 13 has filed a Program Test Authority with the FCC, so they are definitely about to flip the switch to the permanent antennas today or tomorrow. They had previously said they would switch likely by the end of this week, so I would imagine all three stations should be on the permanent antennas by tomorrow barring any problems.

I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity.” David Roberts, ESPN senior vice president, production said, “Cayman brings an unmatched sound and prime-time feel to everything he does. Hi Dave and hope you're well. Gary again, on top of a ridge in south central Howard County, 17-1/4 miles due southwest of TV Hill. Whatever tower obstruction there was shielding my line of sight to just WBAL-TV's down-hanging Aux antenna seems to have been REMOVED as of today. WBAL-TV's signal went from near 0 to about as strong as WJZ's, and almost as strong as WMAR's in the UHF band. (Unless WBAL-TV and perhaps the other 2 stations too have now switched from those Aux facilities to the Final antennas on top of the tower? But I haven't seen any License To Cover paperwork yet...)

Hey Dave, Regarding the earlier post about Eddie Stubbs, former WAMU county/bluegrass host (and Gaithersburg's favorite son!), he is retiring and wrapping up his 25-year career at WSM 650AM Nashville. Tonight is his final farewell broadcast, starting at 7:00 central time (8:00 eastern time). Loretta Lynn is expected to call in shortly after 7:00 and his long-time friend Marty Stuart will be in the studio. Listen live, sometimes it comes through clearly over the air via the 50,000 watt "Air Castle of the South," or listen online wsmonline.com

I have been a heavy consumer of radio and television here in the Washington DC area for over 50 years. I have enjoyed the news feed at DCRTV for a few years but appreciate the switch to leading with the mail bag. I think GUS is a hoot, like Cliff Clavin in Cheers. I did find one of his posts blatantly anti-Semitic but the Cliffs of the world often are. Keep up the good work. Chris is Woodbridge

I am happy to hear that UVA football and basketball are going to be carried on WSBN 630 AM. the only problem is that you can't hear the station in Northern Virginia where most of the alumni live. Since 630 AM moved their transmitter site to Germantown, their signal is gone at night and poor during the day.

Dave, Remember Mark Kaye from WIHT? He posted on Facebook that he has a new news show on Newsmax TV. Steve

Dave's response: Is that where all the washed-up radio guys go? Newsmax?

I find the share reporting to be quite useful. I'm always looking for a hot stock tip. Sincerely, Martha Stewart

In defense of Gus, it was someone without a name who said that Urban One’s stock spiked up 900%, Gus was only saying it was wrong and that people treat the stock info as though it was uniformly correct. I get that Gus isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but a simple scroll into the messages from 7-27 would’ve shown what Gus was opining about. Oh and the stock market is one big game of craps basically. You either hit the dice ready to win or you lose a lot of money in the end. Would I get stock in Urban One, Salem, Entercom, iHeart etc…probably not given that all of these companies have a lot of debt. It is what it is though….it’s a risky investment as are mostly everything else in the stock market. Dan

What are the qualifications of "Gus in Gaithersburg"? Someone posted that he was a "board operator". Does this qualify him to have an opinion on everything that is posted every day? Has his guy ever worked in Broadcasting? He says that the Urban Stock did not have a 900% growth in the stock value. He is WRONG now and is wrong with most of his opinions. This idiot is driving away most readers from DCRTV. Please WAKE UP or you will lose all your readers.

Will the new WaPo "managing editor for diversity and inclusion" ensure that the WaPo begins to have some diversity of political views and inclusion of non-leftist bias in both the news and editorial pages? Or is this just a bit of dishonest flummery?

Today, The Washington Post announced Krissah Thompson will join the masthead as managing editor for diversity and inclusion. She is the first African American woman to become a managing editor in The Post’s history. Here is the full announcement from Marty Baron: www.washingtonpost.com

"Could someone explain how Urban One had a 900% growth in their stock price overnight?" It's easily explained. It never happened. What is up with the Stock Guy idiots? He/they are almost uniformly wrong but they treat it like breaking news from Dallas in 1963. Gus in the Gaithersburg

The Sinclair program aside, I've found that lawyer Larry Klayman has been doing his own daily podcast for months. It is totally unlistenable.

From Axios: Sinclair Broadcast Group asked its dozens of local affiliates across the U.S. this weekend not to air a controversial interview conducted on its program "America This Week," which touted conspiracy theories that NIAID director Anthony Fauci started the coronavirus. Why it matters: Sinclair has been caught up in controversies around journalism ethics before. Most notably, it asked journalists at affiliates to read pro-Trump scripts about "fake news" in 2018. Catch up quick: The interview, conducted last week, features host by Eric Bolling, interviewing researcher and activist Judy Mikovits and her lawyer Larry Klayman, a right-wing activist, about the coronavirus. In the interview, Mikovits says she believes that Fauci "manufactured the coronavirus" in monkey cell lines and paid for and shipped the cell lines to Wuhan, China. That assertion has been widely discredited by scientists and health officials. Details: In a series of tweets, the broadcast giant said it decided to delay the episode's airing and "will spend the coming days bringing together other viewpoints and provide additional context." "All stations have been notified not to air this and will instead be re-airing last week’s episode in its place." "We would also like to clarify that at no point did we air the 'Plandemic' documentary, nor do we have plans to." "This documentary has been widely discredited and we as a company do not support the baseless claims that were rebutted during the original segment." "Further, we valiantly support Dr. Fauci and the work he and his team are doing to further prevent the spread of COVID-19 and are proud to have welcomed him to 'America This Week' as well as our stations via our national bureau to update and inform viewers." Be smart: Mikovits came under fire earlier this year when a video she posted with similarly falsified information about Fauci's role in the pandemic went viral on social media. Even big social media sites, which are usually more hesitant than traditional media companies to remove misinformation, yanked the video from their platforms. The big picture: In the past few years, Sinclair as a company has solidified its reputation as a right-wing broadcaster by investing in a slew of conservative hosts and commentators.

WMAR ABC 2 has responded to signal complaints after their AUX transmitter failure. Thank you for your patience with all of this! -Julie (Asst. Creative Services Director/Programming at WMAR)” — BaltoMedia.net

WETA 26 ammeded its CP for finishing its final repack buildout from late January, 2021, to much sooner, Aug. 28, 2020, so it appears they will be at full power sooner than they recently said, so I’m guessing they have scheduled some tower work for their new antenna sooner than expected to finish by the end of August. — BaltoMedia.net

Just wanted to pass along ( via Lance at radioinsight) former WYII ( now WICL) Williamsport/Hagerstown and former WAMU Bluegrass Country host Eddie Stubbs is leaving his post as night personality at 650 WSM ( which can be heard in the DC area some nights) and announcer for the Grand Ole Opry on Wednesday July 29 after 25 years on WSM.

"Why is someone still paying for electricity to illuminate the ‘70s era 'RCA' sign in Rosslyn?" At Fire Company 6 in Livermore California, there is an Edison bulb hanging from the ceiling that has been lit since 1901. wikipedia.org... It even has its own uninterruptible power supply to assure its longevity. My guess is the landlords are trying to play catch-up with Livermore, in spite of the 60-year head start.

NPR ratings tank... www.npr.org

Dave's response: WTOP, with its steady diet of news, traffic, and weather, has also dropped out of its usual first place with fewer people commuting. But, righty talker WMAL has risen to first place. However, I would have to think that radio listening has got to be down across the board since most of it, these days, is done in the car. In the rare occasion that I do listen to radio in my home office, it's usually on NPR though. Go figure.....

"Great hits of the 60s and 70s, with a touch of the 50s and 80s". Heh heh ... back in the early 80s, if we went back 30 years for tunes, we called it "The Music of Your Life". Welcome to Geezerhood, my friend. Room for everybody.

Slap me if I’ve ever asked before, but why is someone still paying for electricity to illuminate the ‘70s era “RCA” sign in Rosslyn? That’s some expensive real estate to be so mangy. P of the AW

Interesting FCC filing from WMAR this morning: it appears it has been operating at roughly 30% of its licensed power (250 kW) due to major problems with their interim antenna causing the transmitter to shut off. The implication is that it wasn't installed correctly! All 3 Baltimore stations should be lighting up their permanent facilities in the next week, so it's largely moot. (fcc.gov) I'm very surprised that WJZ is already as strong as pre-repack WBAL out here in Loudoun, throwing just 6-7 kW (vs. 26.6 kW) in this direction. No obvious explanation why - antennas can't have become that much more efficient in 12 years.....The soon-to-be Sinclair LPTVs, WDCO-CD and WIAV-CD/WMDO-CD, lit up their permanent post-repack facilities a few days ago. The first two are still broadcasting their placeholder infomercial junk. Believe it or not, WMDO-CD has a continuous operating history dating to 1976, when it was built as W14AA, an Arlington translator for then-Goldvein PBS station WNVC 53. After failing to move the ch. 14 allocation from Arlington to Fairfax for what was to be WNVT 56, they didn't need it anymore - so W14AA was sold to the owners of 1540 WMDO (now WACA) and joined Univision in 1981, when an FCC rule change allowed translators to be fed by satellite. It's been with Univision and UniMas ever since and is now on its 7th different licensed channel: 14, 48, 30, 47 in analog, and 8, 22, 44, 30 in digital...

I realize this is not that interesting to people in DC, but several FCC people showed up in Baltimore for the TV Hill candelabra tower project as Baltimore is one of the most complex repack situations in the country with all three TV stations and all the FMs having to be moved all at once. Some great video shot by WJZ 13. This helps them as they get to switch from a directional signal to a non-directional signal for good now when completed sometime next week. www.facebook.com — BaltoMedia.net

In Burke, hardly an outer suburb, there is no English language AM station with a clear nighttime signal. 630 was, pre-transmitter move. 980 and 1500 can be heard but with enough interference that the experience ain’t pleasant!

Dave's response: During the 40-plus years I lived in Reston, there was only one DC area AM station that provided a decent nighttime signal - WMAL's 630. And now that is gone with its move to Germanton. That is for a suburb in a core county of a major metro area. Yeah, you could kind of also hear 570, 980, 1310, and 1500 at night if you had a decent receiver that was outside, away from all the electrical noise in your domicile. Like a car radio. DC was one of the first major markets to make the listening jump to FM, way back in the 1970s. We've always had sucky local AM coverage in this market, especially beyond the Beltway. Atlanta is no different. Just a few miles outside the Perimeter (their Beltway), AM coverage sucks. And Charlotte, which I am near now, is just as bad.....

I like Me TV FM's slogan: Great hits of the 60s and 70s, with a touch of the 50s and 80s. They play most Top 40 hits of that era and numerous one hit wonders. I think they would do well in the DC area. I understand they do well in Chicago and Milwaukee.

What Happened to Tony Perkins on WUSA? Seems he is off the Air.

What is going on at WBAL-AM this week? I frequently hear the audio dropping out, sometimes long enough to qualify as "dead air". I know come of the talk hosts have been working from home due to Covid, but the problem seems especially bad this week. Could it be connected to the tower work? Seems unusual because their engineering is usually top-notch. Gary

Regarding "Me TV Radio": Props for playing Bruce and Terry's "Summer Means Fun" (bonus points would have been garnered for playing "Custom Machine"). Props withdrawn because they played "Me andYou and a Dog That Blew". It's always interesting to hear an out of market format. But, like so many, it would probably sound old fast.

Dave: Man, just got back from a month down South and do I miss all of the good stuff, especially, about the Redskins latest moves. It's funny how Snyder's inner-officer operations weren't exposed earlier because many people knew about Larry Michael and how he ran the public affairs division of the Redskins. Friends told me last week that he was always nasty to his co-workers and all of this simply caught up to him and others, and I think that's just fine. I hope someone within the organization cleans house along with Chris Cooley and starts over! I really hope other stations in the market are smart enough to never hire guys like Larry Michael... this market can use a refreshing change!

[In DC 98.7% of the listening was to FM Stations] (Spoken in Cliff Clavan's voice) It's a well-known fact there, Normy, that DC was never an AM city to begin with. All the plum AM allocations with the nice high power permissions were handed out to cities other than this god-forsaken swamp, and we ended up with exactly what you see now. AM is hurting to be sure for a whole lot of reasons, but its not like DC sets the stage for AM across the entire country.

Prince George’s County, Maryland native Autumn Joi and radio legend John Monds are joining the WHUR family, rounding out the station’s all-star team. Joi takes over middays from 10am to 3pm Monday-Friday with her ratings winning “Live Squad Show.” Joi, fresh back from North Carolina, is no stranger to Washington radio having spent time at two other DC stations and also up the road in Baltimore. "I started my career in DC over 10 years ago and to be coming home to the top station in the market is literally a dream come true," said Joi. Additionally, WHUR welcomes back Monds as the new host of the “Original Quiet Storm” Monday-Friday 7:30pm to midnight.   Monds’ triumphant return to WHUR marks his second stint at the station and will continue WHUR's legacy of being the only live and local ballad driven R&B night show in the DMV. “I’m so excited to be back at WHUR and a part of the team to lead the ‘Quiet Storm’ back to its rightful #1 place,” said Monds. WHUR Program Director Al Payne says, "Our core mission is to entertain and inform.   The addition of Autumn and John to our already wildly popular stellar team of radio personalities, led by the award-winning “Steve Harvey Morning Show” from 6am to 10am, is guaranteed to keep the DMV engaged and in the know.” WHUR stands on a long rich legacy of delivering broadcast excellence and we are elated to have John Monds and Autumn Joi with us as we begin to mark our 50th Anniversary,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater. Both Autumn Joi and John Monds hit the air today.

An update on WETA 26. They filed something new with the FCC alerting them that they were not going to make the expiration date to finish the repack to channel 31 by the end of July. They say they have all the equipment and have started some work on the ground, but have no firm date to install the new antenna. They are no asking for an extension until late January, 2021. It doesn’t appear as if they have any of the tower work yet scheduled, but unlike TV Hill, the WJLA/WUSA tower won’t likely need the chopper crane, as it’s not that tall, only 606’ above the ground, but it is in a crowded city neighborhood, something a lot of the tower crews have been trying to avoid due to COVID. Also, some updates on the TV Hill work in Baltimore. WJZ TV did not in fact use the WBFF studies on Tues & Wed to do their news. They used a small studio at Producers, also on Malden Ave, a production company, but with the help of WBFF TV, a WBFF engineer told me. And also, WBAL TV did not use Sinclair’s News Central studios in Hunt Valley either, but a production training company called Systems Solutions very nearby Sinclair HQ. Two different engineers told me that. Here is WJZ TV’s news open from down the street with nothing but black drapes behind them. Somehow they were better able to pull the weather off with radar and maps from what appears to be a park. video-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net — BaltoMedia.net

I'm not clear, are we talking about the death of AM or the irrelevance of Nielsen? And can people please stop talking about "in the age of COVID"? No one cares about the 100,000 flu deaths in the U.S. in 1969. This too shall pass. It's not like Before and After the Pulse. Memo to Wob Spewak, 7/22/2020: If you're going to play a "guess who this is" clip, make a fist, not like the one you make late at night, and keep everyone including YOU from TALKING OVER THE CLIP. You, being a "broadcast engineer" and an "audio engineer" should know better. Goddam Human Shoehorn. Fuck me running and not a penny for the "Bonus" show. Newsflash: It's not a "bonus" if you have to pay for it. To the "Is Don Geronimo still alive?" fetishist, Bruce Williams is no longer alive. I hope that will tide you over. What is the new name of the Washington Redskins? Some people claim to know. Are you one of them?

Is AM Radio Dead? In the June Ratings only three AM stations were rated WSBN 0.1 WBQH 0.2 and WTEM 1.0. That is a total share of 1.3 Share. In other words, In DC 98.7% of the listening was to FM Stations. This does not include the stations that do not subscribe to Nielsen. Remember, Nielsen does NOT publish the ratings of stations that do not subscribe to their service.

whenever i visit your website i just want one piece of information: is don geronimo still alive? it's not easy to sort through all the other crap to find that out.. just make a don geronimo is he still alive tab

From Richard Seaby, WJZ 13 engineer, WJZ 13’s new main antenna installed atop its new pedestal. It will be turned on sometime next week they say for those having trouble getting WJZ right now. — BaltoMedia.net

Well the TV Hill chopper crane work started today, a day early, so both WBAL and WJZ had news from alternate locations. WBAL TV stated that they were up in Hunt Valley, so that means likely the old Sinclair NewsCentral studios and WJZ TV said they they were just down the street, so that means a small studio at WBFF Fox 45 with only a black curtain backdrop. At least WBAL TV had a Baltimore skyline backdrop, appearing more normal but not Teleprompter for Stan Stovall. WJZ looked looked like they were in a police lineup, not doing the news. From the live shots, it looks like they made huge progress in just one day. WJZ’s weather was done from what appeared to be Druid Hill Park or a nearby field with Marty Bass at home in pink shorts (no comment). Bob Turk wisely took the day off. But Tom Tasselmyer was out in a patio area at Sinclair in Hunt Valley doing the weather. Not sure how either station handled Master Control of all the switching of shots. WJZ would have had KYW CBS 3 in Philly if necessary, and WBAL TV sister station WGAL NBC 8 in Lancaster. But since it’s all government paid for at practically any cost to the taxpayer, I imagine Sinclair would be just happy to take all their money to do anything they want. WBAL TV shot some video, but I’m sure there’s more to come. WJZ’s chopper got some awesome shots of guys climbing the tower and unbolting and bolting, but here’s some video of the antennas being taken down. Can’t wait for the WJZ video. Someone from the FCC actually showed up at this stating that this is one of the most complex antenna projects in the nation with every major market TV station having to change channels, and even radio station antennas either moved or replaced. Some interesting things are that WJZ and WMAR’s antennas were stacked on top of each other on one arm while WBAL’s analog and digital antennas were stacked similarly. The other arm apparently had WMAR’s analog antenna still. So, EVERYTHING had to come down, new pedestals had to be installed on each arm and each TV station is on a separate arm again by itself. And WIYY gets a new antenna, presumably on the WBAL arm. I’m guessing that WWMX 106.5’s antenna will be re-installed on the WMAR arm. I'm not exactly sure why, but WMAR 2 will be slightly higher at 1007 ft. vs. 1001 ft. for the other two, possibly just the geography of the hill. www.facebook.com... — BaltoMedia.net

From AllAccess.com - "ENTERCOM has reached agreement with its revolver lenders on a covenant holiday for third and fourth quarters 2020. The covenant relief period will extend through the end of 2021."... So what you're saying is you overpaid for CBS Radio for 2 BILLION DOLLARS. You went on a spending spree buying multiple "Podcast Companies", buy AI firms who specialize in replacing humans for a computer and voice tracking across the country. Meanwhile, David Field continues to take his paycheck to the bank every two weeks on the backs of every "Laid Off" Entercom ex-employees.

Let's put an end to the HFS story. A Chief Operating Executive with Entercom once asked if they were considering bringing back HFS. The response was immediate and ending. "No. There's no profit for that format." While the 25 watt signal in White Marsh, Maryland is barely on the air and exists on MIX1065 HD2, it has no live personalities and is rarely updated. It's a placeholder, so that when one brave broadcaster decides to 'Bring HFS Back", they'll be slapped with a copyright lawsuit, because that's what suits do.

This is a great video showing what nearly exactly is going to happen on Baltimore's TV Hill candelabra tower starting possibly tomorrow, courtesy of a WJZ 13 engineer. This video is not from TV Hill, but it is what will happen atop the tower starting tomorrow or in days, weather permitting. It's quite amazing really. These tower climbers are really brave people and it is hazardous work as there have been deaths from this, just like building skyscrapers and bridges. Baltimore is a TV market where every single TV station had to change channels, unlike DC. Makes you wonder huh? I’m still boggled by the 13 to 11 and 11 to 12 thing. How could it not just have been just 13 to 12 to meet the same requirements? The goal was a Baltimore TV station had to be off of channel RF channel 13. I know the Rabbitears guy has weighed in on this but he’s wrong. Both WJZ and WBAL have the exact same parameters and location so this was just a statistical FCC anomaly in their grand repack plan, which was largely brilliant, but in this case shows something. Wasted money that didn’t have to be spent. www.youtube.com... — BaltoMedia.net

I am happy to see that 630 AM WSBN is going to carry UVA Football and Basketball. Since they moved their tower site from Bethesda to Germantown, their nighttime signal is terrible in Northern Virginia. They operate with four towers at night with a very highly directional signal. Before they moved to the new location they had 10,000 Watts. Today it is like a low power AM station. Dave Hughes is correct, they need a Translator in Northern Virginia.

Whatever happened to WRQX 107.3 FM after Cumulus sold it to EMF for their K-Love format? In the most recent June Ratings it ranks number 21 with a 1.0 share. Their Call Letters are WLVW.

Where does WSBN 630 AM rank in the June Ratings? It ranks number 32 with a 0.1 Share. Remember when it was number one as WMAL 630 AM?

I dont care much at all for Spotify, Pandora et al, as it is still the same music I really can get anywhere. And as far as AM being dead, well... I have a solution for both: KIWI SDR. There are software-defined radio receivers (SDRs) peppered all over the globe, connected via the internet and tuneable to any frequency from below the AM band (where the British longwave stations live) up to 30 MHz, including the weekend shortwave pirates. If you start out at rx.linkfanel.net you can pick any receiver off a global map and start tuning in. In spite of the supposed death of American AM radio, I very much enjoy looking for those little peepee townie AM'ers way out in the sticks with local jocks, leaving them on as long as I can (local Gospel stations are especially hilarious, as is the country station in Hawaii). The only cost to me is my monthly internet bill -- I'm not paying for a speck of music on anyone's platform. Sure, not everyone is a radio freak like I am; we all take our entertainment as we prefer it. But dang, it's fun.

The work on TV Hill has begun. I'm two air miles from tv hill and heard choppers late this morning while "balcony gardening". The first photo shows chopper lifting the last piece off. The second photo speaks for itself. Richard in Baltimore

FORGET-A ABOUT IT: Forget about Robb Spewak's Holiday Fruitcake [ Booze cant save any fruitcake. Any fruitcake is a glorified brick. Fruitcake isn't even taken seriously anymore ] No, with Dave moving to North Carolina, I'm waiting for the DCRTV HOLIDAY MOONSHINE. 105.9 The Edge was very much a prototypical hard rock leaning classic rock station that honestly was okay but as Dave opined back then, it had a very limited playlist. Then again it’s what I don’t like about terrestrial radio overall, generic playlists that have about 500 songs at the most. Entercom had a lot of promise with 94.7 The Drive but has flushed it into a basic 80s centric classic hits station with some 70s and 90s songs with very few deep cuts. Now, I am not saying we need HFS to return, as the latest incarnation is mainstream alternative basically and a slight shadow of it’s former life when it was a solid station. What I am saying is that terrestrial radio needs to think outside the box on things. They keep wondering why Sirius XM, Pandora, Spotify, Amazon Music etc…are so popular in this day and age, it’s because with those platforms, you can either pick the music out on your own OR in the case of Sirius XM, there’s a ton of variety that goes beyond the prototypical terrestrial outlet. You don’t get much variety these days on terrestrial radio. AM radio is dead…but because of all the options out there for variety of music online, terrestrial radio is dying as a whole gradually, HD radio works in some ways but the playlists are primarily not like The Gamut(Which is a rare breed on terrestrial radio). Well it is official Julie Donaldson is bringing her assets to the Redskins as Senior VP of Media. As someone commented before Donnie G probably could tell some great stories, I was listening to JFK back when they broadcast for the Skins and there was a ton of allusion to the fact he had weaseled his way into a position with the Skins leaving a trail of bodies with knives in thier backs. He was also a terrible, terrible play by play guy.

[Dave's response: If you have a problem with any specific post, copy and paste it in an email to me and I will review it....] Start with the post that begins “Poor Erin Como”. You shouldn’t need a reader to cut and paste. You’re supposed to be a traffic cop. I understand that the site is pretty free-wheeling and open to varied and loud opinions. But there’s a bright line that you allow to be crossed and I suspect that you really do know better but hesitate to apply the brakes. Every Letters to Editor sections of responsible newspapers get reviewed and stuff that is better left in the trash can is removed. That still leaves lots of room for strong and vociferous opinion. Why you would allow a woman to be grossly characterized is a puzzle. As for other specific posts – how about a response on my idea that all of them should be signed?? Are you willing to make that a standard policy and if not, why not? Meanwhile… best wishes In your apparent semi-retirement. Joel

Dave's response: Upon review, I agree with you. That post is gone.....

From npr.org: A female former producer at Fox News, and another woman who appeared frequently as an on-air commentator on the network, have filed a civil lawsuit Monday accusing former longtime anchor Ed Henry of rape, sexual misconduct and harassment. Prominent Fox News commentators Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson and Howard Kurtz are also named as defendants in the suit, and are accused of sexual misconduct. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Fox News issued a statement on behalf of Hannity, Carlson and Kurtz, calling the claims in the suit "false, patently frivolous and utterly devoid of any merit."

EDITOR – DO THY JOB - I can understand how Dave Hughes might want to take a break from all the effort that goes into managing and writing DCRTV by making reader posts the front page. For years, he has put up an often valuable and interesting blog. But semi-retirement doesn’t relieve him, the editor, of the responsibility to run a moral, ethical site. I hope Dave will re-think allowing posters to get away with putting up juvenile, misogynistic items such as the one that suggests an anchor woman slept her way into a promotion. There’s no room for that kind of clap trap today (or any time before) and Dave needs to do an editor’s job – edit. Toss out the post or put the red pencil to it before blindly publishing. Furthermore, the idea of unsigned missives needs to end. If you can’t put your real name (and Dave has to check) on the post, it doesn’t post. Unsigned = coward. Joel Albert. Potomac MD

102.9 FM switched from Korean music to Latino music programming over the weekend, Friday as I recall. Too bad. Steve Chenevey seems to have dyed his hair last week - to "Broadcaster Henna". That's the shade anchors use to hide the gray. What a shame and unnecessary. Let the gray stay, Steve!

So what have we learned? "Gus In The Gaithersburg", was probably a typo that he/it has to live with. Gus/He/It is an unemployed "Board-Op". We hire "board-ops" whose recent employment was a sandwich artist at Subway. DCRTV Dave, don't let Gus/he/it continue to make a sham of this broadcasting board. I have hired, trained, promoted and have written recommendations for 10 professionals, who have gone far more than I ever expected! Yes, "Broadcasting" is now a sham. Anybody with a mic and a camera are "BROADCASTERS". Let's see fuck face. Do you have a Federal License to operate? Do you have any idea what you're responsible for? What do you do when an Amber Alert is issued? How many times per hour? When are AM Station Base Current taken? When are AM field strength taken? Have you walked out into the cold of "nowhere" to take these readings? Yes, I'm Old School. Yes I have a First Class Radio Telephone FCC License. Gus, before you spew on the aging board, you should go back to school.

What killed record stores? What killed CD's? What killed radio? The smart phone. You can get to the specific app (like Apple Music with $99 cent downloads, spotify, pandora, etc) but none of it is possible without the gizmo in the palm of your hand that can answer any question you put to it in a few seconds with a google search and fast efficient (getting more efficient all the time) relatively cheap connectivity...It can play any music you want any time in any order and commercial free. Companionship can only get you so far...And a few bucks a month for service makes 20 min of commercials an hour seem silly to generations with no patience whatsoever...

That 2011 video... Dave, let me guess. In that 2011 video you might have been yelling at Kenny King to let Cerphe play what he wanted on 105.9 Smooth Jazz? I’ve even forgotten what we called it even though nobody seemed to mind the WJZW call letters hanging around, even on the exterior of the building. I finally hired Jack Stone Signs to at least pull those things down. Next try was “The Edge” which didn’t last long either before the WMAL simulcast. DS

Dave's response: Yeah, Kirk McEwen and Mike O'Meara in mornings. Cerphe in afternoons. It was a hard edge classic rocker with a very tight playlist. If they opened it up and let it flow it might have succeeded. But then again, WMAL needed that FM signal and The Edge was soon toast. Will just add it to the long list of cool defunct DC rockers, along with 94.7 The Globe, WCXR, WARW, WAVA, the old 1970s version of WMAL-FM, and, of course, the legendary HFS.....

DCRTV Dave Flashback January 2011.....

This is Larry Michael. Nice rack.

Dave, I would say that digital downloads and music services have destroyed the brick and mortar record stores mostly and also commercial radio to some extent, but vinyl record sales have increased over the past 5 years greatly too, while CD sales have floundered of late because digital competes with digital and few people will pay for both anymore. Greediness, as always has killed the record industry. Ideally, if you bought a CD or vinyl, you’d expect to be able to hear it on your phone right? But nope, they want the money twice, so they’re losing half it. Check out one of my best friends new Podcasts, Vinyl Vision by Baltimore movie writer Timothy Ratajczak. www.youtube.com

Jim Palmer and Gary Thorne will not be at Camden Yards for the Baltimore Orioles season broadcasting the games. It's unclear yet whether they will be participating at all doing play by play or as an analyst from a remote location yet. Also, it's unclear exactly who will be doing play by play at all or what the roles will be. Exhibition games begin this Monday on TV on MASN I've been told. No info as of yet what The Nationals will be doing. However, I should note that MASN still has no live baseball games listed on its schedule or any of the usual Nats and Orioles talk shows as of today, so I'm guessing this will all be a surprise. Stay tuned. — BaltoMedia.net

I could swear that in the DC area one can hear Jim Bohannan on WFED-1500, and Ben Shapiro on WMAL-FM-105.9. -Then again one can also hear DC's own Larry O'Connor on KABC-790 in Los Angeles from 10-Noon Pacific Time. -- Carl in Olney

On 8/30/20, 962 Affiliates of Westwood One will lose their News operation as Cumulus goes dark with News. Cumulus says they are trying to reduce their operating expenses. They are still trying to reduce their debt. In DC the only News station is WTOP. They have no competition....You can't beat them, but you sure can cut into their revenue. Something to think about. Some Westwood Personalities that still don't have a home in DC are Ben Shapiro, Jim Bohannon, Michael Savage and Dan Bongino.

What will the new name of the Washington Redskins be? It looks like the Black Lives Matter Party won! What do you think?

"Do you recall what Donnie revealed on the air about Chris Core after WMAL let Chris go?" What was that? I posted about it but Dave edited it out. Even though it was said on the over the air nationally syndicated Don & Mike Show. Multiple times. paintyourbaldspot.com... I won't say what it was but I will say that no one in the entire discussion did anything morally or legally wrong. At 2:16 Wob Spewak calls the nice lady from WMAL [something mean]. One wonders why WJFK wouldn't hire him as a janitor. Gus in the Gaithersburg

The only thing I have to say about the Redskins name and the sexual abuse charges from 15 women is that it couldn’t have happened to a better owner or team. Dannyboy probably had a temper tantrum at his mansion and had some servants cut down more trees along the Potomac just to calm his nerves. The great Frank Herzog had it right when he said that Danny Snyder’s management of the NFL team was that of a “Jock Sniffer”. At least we now know that included panties also. Yet nobody will sleep better knowing. — Joe Dirt :-)

"Gus, first, I had a career in broadcasting spanning almost two decades. I don't need criticism from a fan boy." I don't know who you are so I'm going to call you "Misguided guy in a bad episode of The Twilight Zone". After being a board op for over ten years, sounds like you could use a fanning from a critic boy. Call it a "spa day". "Let's see if Donnie is contacted by a DC news outlet for commentary." NO BITCH, I will not "Let's see". "Do you recall what Donnie revealed on the air about Chris Core after WMAL let Chris go?" ... "As for the old HFS, I have been in contact with several HFS vets over the last few years who I consider colleagues and friends. I don't need a frequency to hear their voices." Well good for you, I talk to Weasel and Damien on the streets of Bethesda. But being "in contact" must be better, I should look into that. Most people lie about their masturbation. I think you do need a frequency, Kenneth. Gus in the Gaithersburg

Hi DCRTV Dave. Early this morning I heard multiple stations piled up on 97.9 FM, and an ID for "97-9 X Rocks WBSX" at 7am. I thought 98 Rock was off the air, but they started coming in shortly thereafter, but with a weak signal. At noon their signal is still much weaker than normal. Perhaps they're on their auxiliary transmitter today; related to tower work? First time I've ever heard WBSX Hazleton PA here. --Lw in Mount Airy

There's just no stopping Cumulus, is there? Months after selling off its crown jewels to save the corporation -- including WPLJ (NY), Mix107.3 (DC) and a host of other major stations -- now the company is turning its attention to gutting its VPs, including the dude in charge of Ratings & Research and the guy handling Programming Analytics & Strategy. Seems to me those are positions that they ought to hang on to in order to help return the company to profitability and some form of stature & respect within the industry. RIght now, Cumulus reminds me of one of those rock formations you see out in the desert, where an immense stone has been held up by a spindly little column of sediment for hundreds of years, delicately balanced but doomed to collapse one of these days just the same.

Gus, first, I had a career in broadcasting spanning almost two decades. I don't need criticism from a fan boy. Donnie has had a career in radio for like 40 plus years, has had extensive dealings with the Washington NFLers, Dan Snyder, and, of course, has known Larry Michael since before Larry did PbP for Notre Dame. El Donaldo would be a great source for commentary on what was revealed today. Let's see if Donnie is contacted by a DC news outlet for commentary. Remember, Donnie likes to dance on the graves of those he does not like. Do you recall what Donnie revealed on the air about Chris Core after WMAL let Chris go? I mean, "Wow! I did not see that coming!" As for the old HFS, I have been in contact with several HFS vets over the last few years who I consider colleagues and friends. I don't need a frequency to hear their voices.

Hey Dave, I am hearing word that Patrick Ellis, who hosted the Sunday Morning Gospel program on WHUR, has passed away due to COVID-19 complications. Mr. Ellis hosted the Sunday Morning Gospel show for more than four decades. A personal note: Mr. Ellis hired me as an intern in the Sports Department at WHUR in my senior year of high school in 1981. I worked with sports director Ron Sutton in the mornings during "The Morning Sound" hosted by Jerry Phillips. Sadly, all three of the great gentlemen are gone now. The experiences were truly invaluable and have stayed with me to this very day. Take care, Gary "Digital" Williams

As much as I liked both, people who pine for Don Gernonimo and WHFS are candidates for the forehead "L". Not gonna happen. Scoop o' vanilla, scoop o' chocolate, don't waste my time. I for one would like to see Joe Ardinger posting here, but perhaps his JOB IN THE RADIO INDUSTRY forbids him to. Gus in the Gaithersburg

What is wrong with the bitches in DC media? It's still "The Washington Redskins" not "The Washington Football Team". I don't mean the air talent, I mean their bosses. Many in media have lately been referring to "Redskins" as the team's "nickname". The Dallas Cowboys have a nickname, and it's "America's Team". It's the Washington Redskins. Say it. If only the idiots who are incensed at the name had devoted a fraction of their effort to getting the mutant midget tree-killer to give up his ownership then they'd have my interest. Mayor Bowser from Sha Na Na wants to bring "The Washington Football Team" back to DC. Do we have another crack addict DC mayor? The team should change their name to The Washington Post. "Dave's response: The WaPo has really sunk deeply into the muck and mire ... They don't know it, but they have become a rag with a deep political agenda." They do know it but more troubling is the fact that this seems to be news to our Dave. Same as it ever was. Gus in the Gaithersburg

They're changing the Redskins name? Too bad they aren't changing owners. JA

I admire DCRTV for the "Mailbag" comments. No other broadcast News publication does this. Keep up the good work.

First, if you can't get beyond the paywall, story on Redskins is here: outline.com... Second, while not a Danny fan at all, it's almost a shame about how he was dragged through the mud, hung, drawn, and quartered on social media after the leaks from people "in the know" ... orgies, cocaine, alcohol addiction, flights with Epstein, Gruden's moral lapses, etc. etc. etc. is what was floated by "experts" on Twitter. Twitter folks (and a lot of sports folks in the DC area) were judge, jury and executioner. The story is not good ... I am not condoning at all what is reported, which I'm guessing has a lot of truth given the firings and Larry's "retirement." But Danny was hardly mentioned. Did he know about this culture and did he help light the fires and keep them burning? Very, very good chance of that. Seems his biggest problem in the story was telling the one guy who was a college cheerleader to do cartwheels at Redskins Park. But in the end, he doesn't deserve the death penalty all were calling for because they said he was tied to Jeffrey Epstein (who didn't hang himself) and lots, lots more. Sell the team? Sure.

And now we know the rest of the story… Larry Michael if a CREEPER! Now the only question is, does he grab ‘em in the, um, you know where, or does he sniff them obsessively? LOL

I'm told the chopper crane might be on TV Hill as early as next Wednesday now to hoist all the antennas up top. I’m told at least one person, probably several are shooting video of this event. — Baltomedia.net

Redskin Sexual Harrassment 草莓ss加速器... A few months after Emily Applegate started working for the Washington Redskins in 2014, she settled into a daily routine: She would meet a female co-worker in the bathroom during their lunch breaks, she said, to commiserate and cry about the frequent sexual harassment and verbal abuse they endured. They cried about the former chief operating officer’s expletive-laced tirades, Applegate said, when she recalled him calling her “f-----g stupid” and then requesting she wear a tight dress for a meeting with clients, “so the men in the room have something to look at.” They cried about a wealthy suiteholder who grabbed her friend’s backside during a game, Applegate said, and the indifference the team’s top sales executive displayed when she complained. But most of all, Applegate said, they cried about the realization their dream job of working in the NFL came with what they characterized as relentless sexual harassment and verbal abuse that was ignored — and, in some cases, condoned — by top team executives. Applegate is one of 15 former female Redskins employees who told The Washington Post they were sexually harassed during their time at the club. The other 14 women spoke on the condition of anonymity, citing a fear of litigation because some signed nondisclosure agreements with the team that threaten legal retribution if they speak negatively about the club. The team declined a request from The Post to release former female employees from these agreements so they could speak on the record without fear of legal reprisal. This story involved interviews with more than 40 current and former employees and a review of text messages and internal company documents. Team owner Daniel Snyder declined several requests for an interview. Over the past week, as The Post presented detailed allegations and findings to the club, three team employees accused of improper behavior abruptly departed, including Larry Michael, the club’s longtime radio voice, and Alex Santos, the team’s director of pro personnel...

On Monday, July 20 at 7 p.m., MPT-HD will air A Conversation: Race and Policing, a 60-minute town hall forum that will be simulcast on public radio station WYPR-FM (88.1). The program will also be available for viewing on the MPT livestream at mpt.org/livestream. In the aftermath of the death of George Floyd and the ensuing protests nationwide and in our region, this informative and provocative dialogue will pull the curtain back on the issue of racism and its impact on policing. MPT moderators Jeff Salkin and Charles Robinson will discuss with guests the latest events and trends surrounding these important issues during three segments – Where are we and what’s at stake?, Finding solutions and turning protests into policy, and Police accountability.

Dave, After the WP drops the salacious Dan Snyder story this afternoon, will Donnie G come out of hiding and give his take? Please, we need you on this one, oh great leader of the past. Danny Boy, sex trafficking, Tysons Corner, Larry Michaels, it appears it is going to be bad piece for the Washington football team. Donnie G post your take, please. Dave, please forward this request to el Donaldo, you should have his email address, don't you?

Possible solution to the Channel 6 LPTV problem......If the owners of these stations do not go digital by 7/13/21, take back the licenses and award the licenses to other Minorities who will operate them as Television Stations as intended. You say that isn't fair to the current owners who paid millions of dollars for these licenses. The original FCC plan did not work. It did NOT put Minorities into Television Ownership. Try again. We need more diversity in Television Ownership.

Adam Schefter, @AdamSchefter - Washington’s NFL team hired DC attorney Beth Wilkinson to review the organization’s protocols, per league sources. While Wilkinson is expected to conduct a deep dive into the organization’s past culture, team officials are highly upset/frustrated about speculation running amok.

When the Channel 6 LPTV Licenses were awarded to Minorities, it was done to give Minorities an opportunity to get into Television ownership. How did that work out? How many of these stations are owned by Minorities today? Remember, the General Public was never given an opportunity to apply for these licenses. How many of these stations operated as Television Stations? Most of them operated as FM Radio Stations using their audio channel 87.7 FM rather than operate as intended. This signal is equal to a Class B FM Radio Station. Most of these licenses were sold by the original owners for big bucks. What has happened to Diversity?

Twitter and internet on fire with supposed WaPo bombshell story on more disfunction with Redskins over past many years. Lots of rumors and innuendo. People "in the know" said it's coming out today ....

Dave's response: The WaPo has really sunk deeply into the muck and mire since Bezos bought 'em. Now they call the "former" Redskins "Washington's NFL franchise." They don't know it, but they have become a rag with a deep political agenda. So what? They're also afraid to use other terms they don't like? If it's news its news. The team is still "unofficially" called "the Redskins" until they get a new name. Duh! Enough with the PC censorship.....
Dave, what do you mean you post lots of news? Four items since June 16. And one of those - the Larry Michael item - was cut and pasted from the Post. What exactly do you expect people to pay for? Give me more and I’ll donate.

Dave's response: Rather than use the front page for just some news items that I consider big enough, I have flipped the mailbag to the front page. There I feature partial press releases from stations and comments from you on a much larger batch of local media stories, along with my occasional news blurbs, which are also still there on the news page. I am trying to take a more background role as an "editor" and letting you guys and gals take a bigger part is determining what merits talking about. I care more about station formats and ratings and not so much about what local news celebs are doing. But if that's what the readers want to talk about, have at it. Plus, I am also making an effort to update the postings multiple times per day. The past few years, I've been living on the road. Now that I'm settled down in beautiful western North Carolina, I have more time to "curate" the site. I hope you find it in your heart to make a donation one of these days.....

Good to hear Larry Michael is gone. Time for us DCRTV's to suggest some good replacements. Johnny Holiday would be good. Please suggest some others. thanks Patrick

When Larry Michaels first started broadcasting the Redskin games I thought it was Mike O'Meara moonlighting as the voices are similar. Someone once called the D&M show and asked Mike if he was Larry Michaels. Formerly Mike in Maryland City

Larry Michael “retires”. Crazy stuff going on at Redskin Park this week.

Dave's response: What next? Dan Snyder sells the team to the Morman Church and they move to Salt Lake City. And Entercom pulls the plug on low-rated sports talk WJFK, replacing 106.7 with a resurrected progressive rock WHFS.....

FROM DCRTV NEWS: From washingtonpost.com: Larry Michael, the lead play-by-play announcer on radio broadcasts of the Washington Redskins the last 16 seasons, announced his retirement July 15. Michael, who started working on the team’s broadcasts as a pregame and postgame host eventually joined the club's front office, serving as its chief content officer and a senior vice president overseeing its video content and television shows. For nearly two decades, Michael was one of the organization's main public faces, hosting a daily "Redskins Nation" show on NBC Sports Washington and a weekly show with the head coach during the season. He also served as the master of ceremonies for several team events. Michael replaced Frank Herzog, the team's 23-year play-by-play voice, in 2004, joining Hall Of Famers Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff on the broadcasts, which often became more of a conversation about football than they were descriptions of the games themselves, the Post adds.....

TMOS was so fun today. No rants, politics, or grumpiness. What happened?

...Isn't 98 Rock pretty much "automated" everyday? They have decent & newer rock (compared to all the same rock 93.3 WMMR out of Philly plays/repeats everyday) but the way the 98 Rock seems to be operated is not good. 98 Rock is definitely not 'live & local 24/7'... the JSS morning show (last time I listened was early March 2020) was bad; very shallow topics tightly controlled what JSS allowed to say...and they had useless bloated segments about useless sports, and would take 1-2 callers per 3-5 minute segment. (compared to 93.3 WMMR morning show 15-40+ minute segments with half dozen callers allowed) And there is some crappy afternoon talk show on 98 Rock now? Kurt & some annoying bimbo? Some of the music mix on 98 Rock would vaguely remind of the WHFS

Do you know what happened to Marc and Allison on the WHUR 96.3?

The FCC sent out another notice that the Channel 6 LPTV Stations must switch from analog to digital signals on 7/13/21. This means that these stations will no longer be able to use their audio channel 87.7 FM to operate as a FM Radio Station rather than Television stations as intended. The owners of these stations want to continue to operate as FM Radio Stations and have asked the FCC to extend this date. The licenses of these stations were awarded to Minorities and the General Public was never given an opportunity to apply for them. Most of these valuable licenses have been sold and are no longer owned by Minorities.

ABC7/WJLA-TV announced today it will air encore presentations of an emotional and provocative virtual town hall broadcast last night responding to Monday’s announcement by the Washington Redskins to change the franchise team name. The encore airings of the ABC7 News special “The Racial Divide: Time for Change” will be at the following times on sister cable channel WJLA 24/7 News: Tonight, July 15th at 9 p.m.... Saturday, July 18th at 1 p.m.... Sunday, July 19th at 5:30 p.m.

Get your cameras out for next week. The chopper crane is coming to Baltimore The TV Hill candelabra tower project finale is tentatively scheduled for next week, July 24, with hopes of finishing all the antennas by Sunday. All the weekend news on WBAL & WJZ will be from remote locations. I’m told that even WIYY 98 Rock will get a new antenna too and will have to be automated or remotely programmed, possibly from the old WBAL building on Winands Road, which has a small studio in it. One of the FCC documents specified that it will take roughly 17 flights over 2-3 days to finish the project. Should be a sight to see.

Folks are all over Facebook and Twitter commenting on what a dumpster fire the first "Nehman/C4 morning show" on WBAL 1090 - even C4's former producer, Chris Imms, calling it the "most boneheaded" thing he'd seen WBAL do. The only thing worse was giving Yuripzy Morgan ANOTHER hour. Right now she can barely do 3! And in what universe does it make sense to do a full schedule revamp BEFORE you have a full-time afternoon/drive-time host in-place and able to be announced?

I’m with the previous poster regarding Bryan Nehman. He did work hard to make the morning show worth listening to. Now, as a reward, he gets stuck with C4. I wonder how long Bryan will last. Reminds of prior pairings in Baltimore media. Don Scott finally had enough of Marty Bass and ‘retired’. Mark Viviano got tired of “The Bulldog”, and left supposedly because doing that show was taking too much time away from his TV work. The C4 move is apparently a new trend in programming. Note WJZ-FM moving station idiot Jerry Coleman to the morning show. Rob and Ed were fine. So ruin it w/Coleman. I stopped listening when that happened. I gave the new WBAL show a chance. Won’t be back. How about promotions start a contest? How many times did C4 interrupt or talk over Bryan, a guest, or a caller. Follow that up with how many times Ms Morgan says “you can text me at…or you can call me at…”. Doesn’t matter, since she’ll go on for entire segments at a time without acknowledging either I’ll tune in for the top of the hour news occasionally, and that’s it. Can’t wait to see who they put in the 2:00-6:00 time period. 10th place, here we come.

WCSP has filed to move to the WJLA/WUSA tower. 24kW/708ft seems like an upgrade from its current 36kW/568ft at a District-owned tower in Brightwood in Northwest. In other news, C-Span Radio is a thing that exists. The cynic in me hopes it's a move to make the somewhat crappy signal more attractive for a potential sale, but I'm sure we'll be stuck with this useless waste of power for another couple of decades. fcc.gov

Thank you to the empty suits at Newsradio 1090 for the comedic train wreck that is your new morning show. After many years of hard work to build a new generation of morning listeners, Bryan Nehman gets bumped down to second banana. How many times can you rearrange the deck chairs on this sinking ship? As an earlier mailbagger noted, when the coronavirus pandemic started the station jumped to 3rd place, then fell to 6th and was back down to 8th in the latest ratings. Sounds like a lot of people listeners listened to the station and rejected what it has to offer. Is that any surprise?

WBAL NewsRadio 1090/FM 101.5 announces the launch of its new morning news and talk program featuring the teaming of two of the area’s most recognizable and respected voices: Clarence M. Mitchell IV, known to audiences as C4, and Bryan Nehman. The new show airs weekdays 5:30-10am. C4 previously hosted “The C4 Show” weekdays from 9am to 1pm. Well-connected to the community, he is also known as “Mr. Baltimore” to listeners and his show has featured numerous prominent newsmakers. He was recently honored by the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association in the category of Outstanding Talk Show. Bryan Nehman has spent the past 8 years as host of “WBAL News Now” weekday mornings and has earned multiple Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards over the course of his career. In addition to insight, debate and examination of the day’s top issues, Mitchell and Nehman’s program will provide breaking news, weather, traffic and sports updates. “C4 and Bryan are among Maryland’s most informed, outspoken and connected broadcasters." said Cary Pahigian, the station's president and general manager. “Their frequent on-air collaborations always receive high marks from listeners. This new partnership, along with WBAL’s award-winning news coverage, further solidifies WBAL as Baltimore’s first choice for news and talk.” In addition to the new morning lineup, Yuripzy Morgan moves her talk-show program to weekdays from 10am – 2pm. A permanent host for 2pm-6pm is expected to be announced soon.

Contract renewals for Sinclair stations and channels with xfinity are expiring in July, so if an agreement is not reached this month, it is possible that WBFF Fox 45, WNUV CW 54, and WUTB My 24 could be removed from your channel lineup if an agreement is not reached. In the DC market, this would also cause the removal of WJLA ABC 7. Also included is the Tennis Channel. In southern PA, this could affect WHP CBS 21 and in Richmond, WRLH Fox 35 as well as every other Sinclair station in the country. In September the renewals are up for the Fox regional Sports Networks, now owned by Sinclair, although there are none in this area. — BaltoMedia.net

I live on the Eastern Shore and over the air TV reception has been an adventure lately with the many channel and tower changes. I'm having particular problems with several DC channels. I know that channels 26 and 32 are operating at reduced power and will ultimately increase power and I should be able to receive them well again at that point. I also know that channels 5, 20 and 66 will ultimately wind up on the same tower if they haven't already. I'm having great difficulty picking up those three channels where before I could get them all clearly. Does anyone know if they are operating at reduced power or are they at full power on the new tower and will have a weaker signal to the east permanently? Thanks very much for any help that you can provide.

FCC Rules...... When President Trump was elected, he said that for every new rule the FCC passed, they must eliminate two old rules. This has not happened. The FCC has more Rules than the IRS. The Chairman of the FCC said that they were going to raise their regularity fees again this year. Most radio stations are hurting because the local advertisers have been shut down for months due to the corona virus.

Hey Dave, why the switch on the homepage? It seems as if you've stopped gathering news items (and people have stopped sending you items). That's OK if that's the reason, but it's not enough to make folks donate. I'd happily pay for news, but there hasn't been anything in a month! Just being honest. Thanks.

In 2014 the FCC tried to give Minorities an opportunity to get into Television ownership by awarding Channel 6 LPTV Stations. The general public was never given an opportunity to apply for these signals. 28 of these licences were awarded to Minorities. Now they have until July 13, 2021 to operate as analog operations and then they must go to a digital signal. Most of these stations never operated as Television Stations. They found it to be more profitable to use their audio signal 87.7 FM and operate as FM Radio Stations. WDCN 87.7 FM is an example of this operation in the DC Market. How many of these stations are still owned by Minorities?

WMAR's signal has been relatively stable since a day or two after re-scan here in New Freedom,Pa near the Maryland line.Signal to noise is about 23-24 db and signal strength is about 88%.No fluctuations with a clean ,clear signal day and night. Jack

TEM is a mess these days. Sound quality, updates, rejoiners, etc is terrible.

ABC7/WJLA-TV announced today it will broadcast its planned third live virtual town hall on race relations with a conversation on the historic announcement to change the franchise team name of the Washington Redskins. The ABC7 News special, “The Racial Divide: Time for Change,” will air tomorrow night, Tuesday, July 14th at 7pm on sister cable channel WJLA 24/7 News, and stream live on wjla.com and Facebook. ABC7 Sports anchor Scott Abraham, ABC7 News anchor Michelle Marsh and ABC7 News and Sports contributor Lou Holder will moderate the one-hour virtual panel discussion with leading sports figures, former NFL players, sports business experts and Native American groups on the impact of this announcement. Panelists and special guests scheduled to appear: Doc Walker, former Washington Redskins player, 980 The Team radio host and sideline reporter for The Redskins Radio Network... Fred Smoot, former Washington Redskins player... Mike Richman, Redskins historian and author of “The Redskins Encyclopedia” and “Washington Redskins Football Vault”... John Ourand, Sports Business Journal reporter... Tailgate Ted, Redskins Super Fan... Mary Phillips, member of the Laguna Pueblo Tribe of New Mexico and Omaha Tribe of Nebraska... Olivia Garvey, ABC7 Sports anchor

WMAR is running at well below the full power authorized for their backup facility - my estimate based on the stats reported by my HDHR is no more than 60% of the 850 kW. Trip Ericson said over on AVSForum that he had been told they had an equipment failure. It seemed to have run for full power for about an hour after 9am on 2 July (rescan day) and part of the day on 3 July, but that was it. Any reception at any significant distance since then has been due to tropo.

When WMAR (2) first came up on Ch. 27 their signal was very strong then it dropped off. Now I can't get them at all here 19 miles Northwest of tower. Did something change on TTI sometime after switch. Could it be interference or poor propagation on Ch. 27 ? Other stations are all strong.

Local radio legend and the longtime host of 96.3 WHUR-FM’s #1 rated Gospel Spirit Show Patrick Ellis has been hospitalized for treatment of complications from the coronavirus.  Like millions across the city, country, and globe, Ellis too has been fighting COVID-19 and is being treated at a local hospital. “While his family and colleagues remain hopeful that he will recover from this virus, we are calling on the community to lift Ellis up in prayer,” said WHUR General Manager Sean Plater. Ellis has been the dominating radio voice on Sundays from 6am to 11am for over 40 years. His philanthropic efforts at the station and in the community have helped feed thousands, provided care for substance addicted babies, and assisted in building a shelter for domestic violence victims and their children. Ellis is the recipient of countless awards, proclamations and citations, including Washingtonian Magazine’s Person of the Year, NAB Radio Host of the Year, and many more. Ellis’ family issued the following statement: Patrick is a fighter and we remain hopeful that he will return to the job he loves and has cherished for more than four decades, and that we will hear his voice across the airwaves again soon. To his devout listeners, he loves and misses you.  We thank you for your outpouring of love and support. We ask that you continue to lift him up in prayer as he heals. Please continue to stay safe and healthy.” To send well wishes to Patrick Ellis, please call the 96.3 WHUR Community Response Line at 202-308-7183.

Dave's response: Why the long-term lease deal? Why doesn't Bloomberg just buy the station from Entercom? Bloomberg does own business talkers in other markets like NYC. Why the rental in DC?

It was announced on the C4 prgram (WBAL) today that "starting Wednesday, C4 will be joining Bryan Nehman from 5:30 to 10:00" Ms Morgan will assume the 10:00 - 2:00 time slot. I'm not clear if this means that the current news/traffic/weather aspect of the 5:00 - 9:00 slot is going away

WETA TV filed a Transition Progress Report today with the FCC. Here is the latest somewhat nondescript update directly from the filing: “Transmitter and RF components have been received and are in local storage. The outstanding items relate to electrical work, Pepco approvals and transmitter installation. The current on-air date is anticipated to be Summer 2020.” So if you’re having trouble getting WETA TV now via antenna, this will probably be fixed sometime this summer.

Dave: Good afternoon. I read your posts daily. My question: Why has WTEM 980 put Colin Cowherd on the air in place of Doc Walker and Brian Mitchell for the past two days? Thank you. Bill Harper, Gainesville, VA

I see Carol Maloney just got laid off, are there any other changes at this time?

Sad to hear about Bloomberg re-upping with 99.1. An WRNR (FM)-type station on that big stick would make Maryland great again!

[Hello DCRTV Dave. I just found this obit for my friend longtime radio friend Pat Murphy.] Jerry Michael "Pat Murphy" Graves 1949-2019... Mike “Pat Murphy” Graves went to be at rest on Thursday, October 3, 2019. God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around you and whispered, “Come to me”. A golden heart stopped beating hard, working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. No matter what name you knew him by, Mike or Pat, if you knew him, you knew a special person. Mike Graves, the man so many of us knew for over 45 years as radio and television personality Pat Murphy, entertained, informed, and touched the lives of each of us. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam from 1966 to 1969. While he never spoke much about his time in the service, he was proud of having served, and he knew the gravity of the situation that he was in while serving. To many of us, he was a broadcasting legend. To his family, he was dad. And like everything else he did in his life, Mike Graves put his all into his family. He passed away with Noreen, his wife of 12 years, and his dog, who was his constant companion, by his side. After a long battle with cancer, it is a rest that is well deserved. Mike had turned 70 this past April, and would very quickly tell you, with a broad and warm smile, that he was given a very full life. He was one of the happiest and most sincere individuals that the world was ever graced with. Standing shoulder to shoulder with national talk hosts, presidents, governors, senators, and people from all walks of life, he was always the same wonderful person. Had the opportunity to make friends with many superstars of the industry when he served as president of the National Association of Radio Talk Show Hosts. From radio DJ to television news anchor to radio talk show host, Mike, as Pat Murphy, gave us his all. His dedication, love for his work, and genuine desire to be the best that he could possibly be, all came together to make him who he was. What he was, was a father, a husband, a friend, and a mentor. I saw the news about the lineup change at ESPN Radio in August, so I went to take a look at the whole thing. I must say I am not impressed. With the exception of Mike Greenberg, & Dan Lebatard, there’s nobody that I am really compelled to listen to. What happened to Trey Wingo and Mike Golic, Sr.? I had heard Wingo might be doing golf coverage, but what about Golic Sr.? Did they just give him the boot, did he retire, is he doing something else! Anyone know?

Will Univision get FCC approval to sell 100% of their company to a foreign entity? Under the present FCC Rules, a foreign company can own only 25% of a broadcasting company. This Rule dates back to the 1930's. Stay tuned.

Westwood One, which is owned by Cumulus, will drop their News Operation in August. This will leave 1,000 stations without this news. AP News will pick up some of the stations. How much money will Cumulus save by this move? How long before Westwood One drops their syndicated Talk Personalities? We know that Cumulus is trying to reduce their debt. Some of the Personalities are Ben Shapiro, Mark Levin, Jim Bohannon, Michael Savage and Dan Bongino.

RE: Ode to BaltoMedia.net. "Tasteless!' In my malebag submission that was posted and then deleted, I never mentioned Robb Spewak's Holiday Fruitcakes one time. [I'm sure they are yummy delicious] Boy, for such a large man, Spewak is sure "thin-skinned." TMOS Patron Society or DCRTV? My donation goes to DCRTV and Dave Hughes.

I don't think the MPT studios are going to be available to WBAL. They are upgrading. J.R.Richardson

Clearly, Entercom is fine with whatever it gets from leasing WDCH, as it just re-upped the agreement with Bloomberg for another 5 years until 2026. Dave actually omitted WLVW from the ratings - it drew a 1.0 and is T-19 with WTEM and WFLS-FM(!). That puts it as the lowest-rated DC-based FM music station, an almost laughably small audience for that full-market signal. Even WWEG drew a 1.9!

Dave's response: Did I leave WLVW out? Will fix.....

You won't lose this reader because of 'Gus.' I like Gus. He thinks like me. I'd like to hire him as my press agent. Please contact me. Signed, Rodrigo Duterte

Dave's response: I like Gus, too. His posts sometimes go over the top and I'll pull 'em if I get a complaint. Occasionally, I will not even run 'em. I do think sometimes he should tone things down a bit. He could often get his message through without some of the really nasty stuff.....

Make no mistake, WMAL's Mark Levin is still a shithead and bad radio, but liberal media is no better. Today's Huffington Post has the following articles: "My Fat Body Is Not a Punishment, No Matter What Drew Barrymore Says", "I Got a Medical Tourist Visa to Give Birth in Another Country", "I Planned to Take a Psychedelic Trip to Battle My Anxiety. Then the Pandemic Hit.", "I've Seen Over 50 Doctors and No One Knows What's Wrong With Me". Eff the Stock Guy and his aggressively wrong information. Today's TMOS just kind of laid there like a failed omelet. Hi Wob. One day Wobewt Jr. will awake before dawn (fat chance!) put his boots on, take a face from the ancient gallery and walk on down the hall. Gus in the Gaithersburg

Cumulus is shutting down Westwood One news.

WOW….big drop for WAMU which I did NOT see coming. I was thinking that WTOP, WMAL and WAMU would be fighting at the top 3 positions with this being a big election year. Yes, DC is having a conservative talk splurge for now but I still think that Northern VA will STILL be blue on 11-3. WJFK is dropping big time but with the NBA, NHL and MLB coming back at the end of the month, both WJFK and WJZ-FM will rebound. Sports Talk was the expected loser with sports out of commission per say as there’s only so much you can do with Sports Talk and you ended up with the segway for guy talk. Also, you can see a good spirited battle for the classics audience between WIAD and WBIG as well which is something good actually. The biggest disappointment in my view is still that WLVW doesn’t register in the Top 20 still after Cumulus sold WRQX to Educational Media Foundation and EMF put in K-Love on there. The other disappointment is that WDCH is still floundering with Bloomberg Radio. HOWEVER for a business talk outlet, it’s about as good as it’s going to get and I’m sure that Entercom is thankful that Bloomberg has a lease on it. As long as Entercom gets paid by Bloomberg per the time brokerage agreement, I don’t think they mind the low ratings for WDCH as it’s a low cost station to own. They wouldn’t mind better ratings but they’re aren’t sweating it much either though. Dan

Re.: June ratings for Baltimore. It’s interesting to see WBAL go from #3 to #6 to #8 over the recent ratings periods. Gee, I guess people have gotten tired of listening to monologues by the hosts for 75% of their shifts. I do think Bryan Nehman and the morning show is okay. It could significantly improve by dropping ‘Screamin’ Scottie”. It’s hard to listen to WCBM in the morning. When the Geezer hosts, and the Geezer traffic guy get together, it’s like 3 college jerks at a keg party. Makes it hard to take any of them seriously. I guess I shouldn’t expect much from 70’s radio, and I am referring to age, not the decade.

2020 DCRTV SUMMER STIMULUS FUND – READER SPONSORED. GOAL $1,200. DONATE TODAY. If you’re like me, you’ve enjoyed independent DCRTV for years – sometimes for decades – but have never donated to Dave. That’s why today, I, on behalf of all of you, donate & launch Operation: DCRTV SUMMER STIMULUS FUND, a new quarterly fundraiser started and supported by us readers – and prolific mailbag authors.. WHY NOW? Recently, Robb Spewak of The Mike O’Meara Show [TMOS] emailed our DCRTV Dave and wanted multiple “tasteless” mailbag posts from multiple readers critical of TMOS removed [ posts were constructive criticism of Mike O’Meara’s ongoing political/social rants] With Spekwak as their point person, censorship pressure from a display advertiser. Spewak’s heavy-handed tactics unfairly puts Village Peoples' Censorship Disco-Dancing Cop Dave in an on-going position to balance website solvency vs. blue-penciling mailbag posts. SOLUTION! The more DCRTV becomes reader-supported, the less TMOS and other display advertisers and “public DJ figures” will have the bully-pulpit power to successfully force posts to be removed from the mailbag. As Nancy Reagan once promoted, “Just Say No – To DCRTV Mailbag Censorship” As Dave can confirm, I’ve donated the first $100. Now, it’s your turn. { Dave, tell your loyal readers below all the ways they can donate to DCRTV - and keep us updated ] Stay Safe. Adapt & Overcome.

Dave's response: Thank you. You can help support DCRTV via Paypal at www.paypal.me/dcrtv. Or send a check made payable to Dave Hughes to 104 N Green St #116, Morganton NC 28655. Regarding Robb Spewak's request to delete tasteless posts regarding Mike O'Meara, I will usually delete questionable posts if asked to. I do often trash posts before they're posted if I determine them to be tasteless. But I also rely on complaints from readers, like Robb.....

WHUR radio personalities Allison Seymour and Marc Clarke seem to be missing from the airwaves in the afternoons, 3-7pm; and they don't seem to have a presence on the radio station's website. Any idea what happened? Thanks, Dawn

FROM DCRTV NEWS: June radio ratings. Full-day, age 6+. Washington: 1) WMAL, 2) WTOP, 3) WMMJ, 4) WHUR, 5) WAMU, 6) WASH, 7) WETA-FM, 8) WIHT, 9) WWDC, 10) WIAD, 11) WPGC, 12) WBIG and WGTS, 14) WMZQ, 15) WKYS, 16) WLZL, 17) WPRS, 18) WJFK-FM, 19) WTEM and WLVW, 21) WDCN. Baltimore: 1) WWIN-FM 2) WERQ and WPOC, 4) WIYY, 5) WQSR, 6) WZBA, 7) WLIF, 8) WBAL-AM, 9) WYPR, 10) WWMX, 11) WCBM, 12) WJZ-FM, 13) WZFT, 14) WBJC, 15) WEAA, 16) WCAO, 17) WQLL, 18) WJZ-AM.....

If you continue to post the trash and false information that "Gus in Gaithersburg" sends you every day you will lose all your readers.

The new DC ratings are out for June and WMAL is number one again. Here are the top five stations in DC......WMAL 8.2, WTOP 7.6, WMMJ 7.1, WHUR 7.0 and WAMU 6.8.

Dave's response: A big drop for WAMU. Also, WJFK and WJZ-FM are way down in the basement with the whole sports scene on hold.....

Since WJLA has gotten rid of Julie Wright they haven't cut traffic although she said she was laid off. They have Angela Foster doing it full time, from home, over the phone -- which sounds terrible but last week or 2 weeks ago they also had Bobby Laurie on traffic (he's more articulate than both of them, imho) - his audio sounded the same so it has to be a WJLA issue. So was Julie really laid off or did they just not renew her contract? What's the plan there? Keep Angela? Her voice is even in the promos for the morning show.

"Salem stock price drops below $1 again. It closed at 99 cents yesterday." Dave, why do you continue to post this stream of ill-informed stool? Salem closed at or above a dollar Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. I fine these lying posts to be in in bad taste and hurtful and easily documented fucking lies and request that you remove them. If this guy is in the stock industry (fat chance! my money's on mental defect) what he's doing would constitute a crime. You might also share some liability; you're not Facebook or Twitter and personally paste posts onto the mailbag page. You're gonna be running for cover when SECmania runs wild over you. Gus in the Gaithersburg.

I listen to it because it's on the radio, but I have beaucoup problems with WMAL. "Mornings on the Mall" is as unlistenable as Don and Mike's Morning Zoo on WAVA. Mark Levin continues to lie that Israel is the ancestral home of the Jews for 4,000 years when his own scripture details how they originated elsewhere, invaded Palestine and slaughtered the inhabitants. It's called the Bible. And he repeats himself. He repeats himself, ladies and gentlemen. He thinks that's good radio. He thinks it's good radio. John Batchelor, now that's good radio. The one and only good thing about George Noory is he sounds a little bit like Art Bell. Gus in the Gaithersburg

Radio Hall of Fame Committee Members, First of all thank you for your patience during the process of finalizing our nominees for the 2020 Radio Hall of Fame. In reviewing the list we can all be proud of the group that we have selected and am confident that it will lead to six voted upon inductees that will make up this year’s class. Attached is the release which has been sent to the media for release first thing tomorrow, July 9th. Please note this is embargoed until tomorrow morning. Monday, July 13th, industry voting will start with 600+ industry members receiving a confidential ballot via Votem.com. Voting results will remain confidential and will be reviewed and revealed by Andrew Rosen of Miller Kaplan at the committee meeting in August. The public vote begins July 20th. As I mentioned, we will use the online voting service Votem for the industry ballot as well as the public vote. The committee will convene on Tuesday, August 11th at 2p Eastern to review the results of the vote in the four categories voted upon by industry execs. The committee will make their vote in the public category at our meeting which will determine the inductees in the two public vote categories. Finally, the committee will then take on the task of selecting two additional inductees for the 2020 class of the Radio Hall of Fame. The two committee inductees must receive 75% of the vote from the Nominating Committee. Those of you who I previously asked to reach out nominees can contact them ASAP and let them know that starting tomorrow morning they are free to discuss their nomination on air, their local media and social media. We will have exciting news on the virtual induction show we are planning that we can share at the next committee meeting. I look forward to our speaking to you all August 11th to finalize the process of induction for this year. Regards, Dennis Green, Chairman, 2020 National Radio Hall of Fame Nominating Committee

The June ratings will be out tomorrow. Will WMAL be number one again in June? DC seems to like conservative TALK more than they like All News.

40 years since the Walkman. A long time. In it's heyday, they were considering a special version for people with colostomy bags. It was to be called the 'Shitman.'

Found a couple of old pictures in my files from 1999 of the crane mishap on top of the tower. Not the best pictures off the screen from all of those years ago. Rob in Baltimore

Longtime Delaware radio newsman Allan Loudell has died at the age of 64. Allan was born in Western Springs, Colorado, before moving to the Chicago area, where he grew up and attended Lyons Township High School--where he would be inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1996. He went on to study communications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduating in 1977. Allan joined WILM Newsradio in Wilmington in 1987, working there for 18 years as Program Manager before joining WDEL in 2005, hosting morning and afternoon magazine-style programming during his time as an anchor and host before his departure in 2020. www.wdel.com

Here in New Freedom,Pa,just over the Maryland Line, signal strength of all three major stations is EXCELLENT. WBAL and WJZ have a SNR (signal to noise ratio) of 30 to 31dbu,while WMAR is cruising a 25dbu. Excellent picture quality and no problems with an outside antenna. Jack.

I’ve been corrected on the TV Hill death story. Apparently a crane almost toppled, but no one died. Someone from WBAL TV tells me that it’s news to him that they’re using Maryland Public TV studios, but that he just thought they might do the news outside via a satellite truck in a parking lot. Still nothing on what WJZ TV is planning or what other TV station they might use, but it was suggested that Sinclair still has those empty studios and equipment in Hunt Valley for that failed News Central venture, so it’s likely Sinclair is also involved in this in renting out some space there temporarily. But still no final word or date. The AUX signal for WMAR ABC 2 seems to be pretty solid, but definitely complaints on WBAL & WJZ from places south and even up in PA. With the antennas over 100 foot lower, the mountainous areas in PA are problematic at the lower height.

I’ve been discussing the TV Hill permanent 3 antenna replacement atop the candelabra tower and what’s going to happen this month or next with a local engineer with some knowledge of the project. Both WBAL TV and WJZ TV will have to evacuate everybody from their offices and studios on TV Hill meaning no news broadcasts from there. Apparently WBAL TV is going to do the news from Maryland Public TV in Owings Mills via an STL permit they already have. WJZ-TV has contracted with some other unknown TV station to broadcast its news. I’ve also been told that KYW CBS 3 in Philly has two studios and the engineer suggested it might be there, but I don’t know exactly what TV station it is. The entire project even with a chopper crane I’m told will take about 17 flights over 2-3 days. WMAR TV is on York Road, so they don’t have to evacuate. During those 2-3 days, it’s very likely a lot of over the air people might lose some signals, most likely the FMs, depending on what backup plans the stations use. Nothing this complex has been done on TV Hill since the original DTV switch and someone I’m told died during that project, although a chopper was not used then, but a crane from the ground apparently toppled and fell killing someone on the ground. At least that’s what I’ve been told. Also keep in mind that WIYY 98 Rock will have to be automated and/or remotely programmed for nearly 3 days too and WIYY and WBAL FM up top will have to be powered down far lower or off the air. I didn’t know it, but WBAL/98 Rock have remote studios on Winands Road at the old WBAL transmitter building that are surprisingly still usable and might be used. Plus, wouldn’t it be so cool just to see Rhea Fiken show up to do the weather just one last time on WBAL TV at the MPT studios? It should be interesting. Still no firm date scheduled, but the latest FCC update states within 30-60 days is predicted. Final thing, you won’t have to re-scan again as they will still be on the same frequencies, but just stronger signals and omnidirectional... — BaltoMedia.net

Back fresh from vacation, after discussing the trip to his summer home in Maine, the sort everyone has, the sort millionaire Bernie Sanders calls his "summer camp" the marquee name announced a recently added feature to the show's webpage allowing viewers to DONATE to the show. The show that opens with said marquee name telling listeners to "stop sucking" by sending them money, the show where Oscar told a listener who cancelled his bonus show subscription (can you even do that?) to "fuck off". I would rather travel back in time and buy Don Imus a bottle of vodka. The marquee name called people who disagree with him "puppy dogs" and "toddlers" and thinks "I really, really believe this" is a cogent argument. This was the lamest back-from-vacation show in "radio" history, just a lame diaper load of phoneitin with the usual political pontification. Happy, Wob? Gus in the Gaithersburg

[RE: Olivia Garvey is the new Sports Anchor at WJLA-TV coming from NBC Palm Springs. She is the daughter of former MLB player Steve Garvey.]. Chip Brierre was just recently booted from WJLA to make room for Ms. Garvey. Over at WUSA, Frank Hanrahan and Diane Roberts (both of whom are very good sportscasters with a long history in this area) had both been freelancing for quite some time but they just recently hired a young blonde sportscaster of their own: Sharla McBride. Guess experience doesn't matter these days and you're SOL if you're not a pretty blonde chick.

ABC7/WJLA-TV announced today it will broadcast its second live virtual town hall addressing current affairs of race relations. This discussion will feature local faith and mental health experts. The ABC7 News special, “The Racial Divide: Time For Change,” will air tomorrow night, Tuesday, July 7th at 7pm on sister cable channel WJLA 24/7 News and digitally on wjla.com and Facebook. ABC7 news anchors Jonathan Elias and Michelle Marsh will moderate the one-hour virtual panel discussion with religious leaders and mental health experts from the Washington D.C. region.

I moved from Maryland to Colorado 5 years ago. KOA 850 radio is the Denver AM "power house" and trends towards sports. For the vacationing afternoon team Big Al and JoJo, a sports focused team, KOA played an iHart podcast on supernatural subjects yesterday. First time since listening to them that I had not heard their typical sports fill-in people filling in. Any iHart stations in the D.C. area do that yesterday or maybe this weekend? Speaking of NC radio, 95.7 out of Charlotte is an independently owned station with a refreshing approach to Classic Rock type tunes.

Dave's response: Yeah, WXRC, The Ride, plays a lot of deep tracks. And a great signal to the northwest of Charlotte, where I am - www.957theride.com...wxrc.tunegenie.com...

Find it quite funny how on Fox5, Erin & Angie are trying to develop some sort of chemistry w/their male co-anchors with “witty” banter. However, neither Wisdom nor Steve are taking the bait. Erin & Angie are left hanging quite often. Ya can’t bottle chemistry, pour it into the anchors’ coffee cup & insto presto it happens. But hey, management has made the decision to put Angie & Erin ront & center & probably feel they can’t turn back...And who the heck is providing the music played going into breaks or after coming back? Not only is it not that great, a lot of times, it’s played at a level that you can barely hear what the anchors are saying.

Dave, you say you can't pick up any FM radio from Asheville eh? What about from Spartanburg/Greenville SC? (98.9, 93.7, 92.5, 101,1, etc) Far fewer big hills in the way...and what about any FM radio from Greensboro-High Point-Winston-Salem area (Triad)? (88.5, 104.1, 99.5, 98.7, etc.)? Stuart

Dave's response: Most of our FMers come from the Charlotte market but I can also get many Greenville/Spartanburg stations including a cool rocker on 93.3 and a talker on 106.3. Plus the Johnson City TN/Bristol area. I can hear some Greensboro area stations on the car radio but they're weak at my location. My favorite station is from Spindale NC www.wncw.org.....

Gary here, on top of a ridge in south central Howard County, 17-1/4 miles practically due southwest of TV Hill. WMAR's omindirectional signal is coming in great for me on UHF Chan 27. It's about 6 dBu stronger than it had been on UHF Chan 38. WJZ's signal on VHF Chan 11 is also quite good and stable, just fine for HDTV. But - surprise - I am getting NO usable signal above noise for WBAL-TV on VHF Chan 12. Not even scatter or multipath blips! Longley-Rice (and common sense) says I should be getting almost as much signal strength right now on Chan 12 as I am on Chan 11. Notably, all 3 Aux antennas are hanging DOWN from the top base on the TV Hill Tower. Perhaps some Tower infrastructure is blocking my particular line-of-sight from southwest to just the WBAL-TV Aux antenna, and not to the other 2 Aux antennas. Thoughts on this idea? Cheers, Gary

This afternoon signal strength from WMar on Ch. 27 is down to 57 from 90 it was this morning. So like someone else said something changed. Thanks fir reference to www.Rabbitears.info

Feel free to send me any tasteless TMOS jokes to BaltoMedia.net. I only have to deal with Mark Zuckerberg and everybody knows he doesn’t care, so impossible to threaten me really. What are they going to do? Take away my Stimulus check that I didn’t get? :-) — BaltoMedia

You beat the -200 odds. lol A 3-day consulting job this 4th but on Monday, I'll mail you the cleanest $100 bill I've got. FYI, over the years, spent a lot of time at Fort Bragg... If you ever need a quick road trip, love Asheville.

Dave's response: Been to Asheville. Just 45 minutes away. Love it, but I can't get any FM radio from there because Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain on the east coast, is in the way. Oh, mail the bill to Dave Hughes (or Camo Dave), 104 N Green St #116, Morganton NC 28655.....

The best way to view all the Aux. facility specs for the candelabra tower is on Rabbitears. www.rabbitears.info... To sum it up, WMAR, WBAL, and WJZ are all about 100 foot lower on the tower at slightly higher powers. Also, both WBAL and WJZ TV are directional towards the north and northeast respectively, so expect worse reception towards Annapolis towards Columbia for those two. WMAR TV is omnidirectional, so there shouldn’t be as much impact. The chopper crane is tentatively scheduled for sometime in late July to take the old antennas down and hoist the new ones atop the 3 corners according to WMAR 2’s last FCC filing. Keep in mind that these Aux facilities are still taller than any of the DC TV stations, but for those out in the boonies, like the mid-shore or southern PA, yeah, you might have some trouble, although someone told me today that he was still picking up all 3 stations in West York, PA, so that’s a good sign. Apparently quite a lot of people around York, PA watch WMAR and WJZ mainly because WHTM ABC 27 and WHP CBS 21 are on towers north of Harrisburg and the mountains make reception quite difficult just north of the Maryland line in low lying areas. I haven’t heard how these Aux. facilities are faring on the Mid-shore yet or to the south or southwest of Baltimore. — BaltoMedia.net

Censorship pressure from TMOS who is a display advertiser? {Odds that you will post this -200]

Dave's response: Robb Spewak emailed me and asked me to review the particular posts as being rather tasteless. I agreed and removed them. If any particular posting generates a request to remove it, I will review it and in many/some cases pull it.....

RabbitEars has info on everyone's auxiliary facilities: rabbitears.info... It's indicated by "DTX" in the tech data dropdown, except for WMAR's which is authorized by STA right now. The two VHF channels are directional enough that they are probably hard to receive outside of the city proper, especially in the south and west. Someone on AVSForum already posted about losing WBAL in Eldersburg, which is less than 20 miles NW of TV HIll. Here in Loudoun, I picked up WMAR solidly until about 9:45, at which point they seem to have reduced power significantly. WJZ now has a note on their website about switching to their main facilities by 1 August, weather permitting.

A reader asked where to find information about TV Hill's auxiliary transmitters. Browse to www.rabbitears.info... Enter a call sign (e.g., wmar) and click search... Click on Technical Data... The information for the antenna at ~900 feet is the aux antenna. The ~1000 ft antenna is the future primary. Click on the Channel 27 link for some mapping tools.

How much is WZHF 1390 AM worth if they sold it? The last AM sold in DC was 1260 AM, owned by Salem, sold for $750,000. How much is John Garziglia's Translator worth in DC? It is also carrying the Russian propaganda on 105.5 FM. Is John Garziglia registered as a Russian Agent? He is a communications attorney in DC.

RM Broadcasting LLC in Florida, is registered as a foreign agent for carrying Russian Propaganda on WZHF 1390 AM. RM is leasing the station from Arthur Liu, the owner of the station. RM is paying the owner $1.4 Million from Russia to carry the Russian Propaganda in DC. Congress should require the owner of the station to register as a Russian Agent not the LLC that is leasing the station. The LLC is just a "Front" for the Russians. Anyone could lease the station.

Also a bit of information in the June 15 letters to the mailbag, below. Some degradation with the aux transmitters was predicted because of their different broadcast pattern and lower height on the tower. Fringe reception should improve when the new main facilities come on line.

3 TV sets tuned to Ch,11 instantly switched from WBAL to WJZ without re-scanning at 9:00. No announcement. Very crude. Tune to Ch. 13 - nothing. Tuned to Ch. 2 and found 2 of 3 sets switched without re-scanning. Comparative signal strengths here in Eastern Carroll County using amplified yagi antenna. WMAR on Ch. 38 77-82, on 27 87-90; WBAL on Ch. 11 90-92, on Ch. 12 90-92; WJZ on Ch. 13 86-89, on Ch. 11 93-94. All good. Will see what happens when it gets windy and/or cloudy. I can't find info. on Aux. facilities on FCC data base. Can anyone tell us.

Hi Dave! This is another Dave. Just letting you know that it seems you've uploaded the mailbag page as the index page for the DCRTV site. Looks really odd with the mailbag page and not the news page. As always, keep up the good work.

Dave's response: I did that intentionally. Since the mailbag has been getting much of my traffic lately, I have made it the Front Page. The news blurbs are still available on the NEWS page. Takes some getting used to but the responses have been good.....

What’s even stranger about the vanishing of Don Geronimo is that all of his 18 fans have disappeared from social media as well. Except his wife. His podcast fan base never grew... Sad ending really. Ego and pride were his downfall..

Dave's response: Had to snip some allegations out of the above. Don does read this mailbag.....

Who cares about "Don Geronimo" (Mike Sorce) today anyway? Gone. "Hasbeen". Living in the past.

Hey Dave - Of course this is WZHF Spootnik. www,opensecrets.org Cheers, BK

The budget ax of Forever Media fell again in Wilmington, and in HavreDeGrace. WXCY‘S music director and 7-12m host, Jeff Hunt is gone. Tyler Daniel goes back to co host mornings with Paula, who will also do middays. Tim Hartly moves to afternoon drive, Amanda Lynn now handles 7-12m.

"WBAL, WJZ, and WMAR are still on track to move to their new frequencies July 2, possibly at reduced power from new auxiliary antennas"....Yes, on 2 July all 3 are transitioning to what will become their permanent post-repack backup antennas. All of them have slightly _higher_ power than their final facilities to compensate for being lower on the tower, although WBAL and WJZ will be directional. I actually caught WMAR testing on channel 27 last week, so that backup facility seems pretty robust at 50 miles. The latest filing, also from WMAR on 18 June, indicates the helicopter lift for everyone's final antenna installation is scheduled later in July.

YouTube TV hikes its price $15 to $65 per month. Is it becoming more like bad old cable TV where you pay too much for a bunch of channels, many of which you never watch? Will "cord cutters" who dropped cable TV for YouTube TV now be dropping YouTube TV?

WMJF (virtual channel 39) in Towson "repacked" to real channel 23 on June 30. Signal is much improved, in the BWI area at least. WMJF is a low power station that carries the Grit, Justice, Quest, Ion, Buzzr, and Shop LC sub channels. WBAL, WJZ, and WMAR are still on track to move to their new frequencies July 2, possibly at reduced power from new auxiliary antennas until their new primary antennas are installed.
